Analysis of Rock Video 1

Ignorance by Paramore

This video is a complete contrast to the previous pop videos's as it's a different genre of music which the video has to match. Therefore it's more edgy with slightly more personality and expression.

It's first of all set in a dark and gloomy cupboard/ small room which looks very cramped due to the amount of people squashed in the room. This dark and gloomy atmosphere enhances a sinister sense, especially as the lead female singer is leaning and almost pushing herself up against the wall as if she's slightly scared.

The use of only one bare light bulb on the ceiling which is movable is a great way to create this effect as not much light is reflected from it. The lead singer also seems to use it as a prop to pull it around to see the room or people in it but also seems as if she's using it as a microphone at some moments.

The shots are often not held too steady, however this seems purposely done to create this bewildered and confused atmosphere of the female. When longer shots are used we can see a flashing light coming from the left side of the screen which adds to the atmosphere, but also the fast cut shots creates a fast pace to the video and a sense of rush.

As this is a rock video the emphasis of guitars is huge as there are many close ups and shots of the musicians playing the guitars, which we can hear in the song. Also as the guitar in the music becomes stronger in sound a different set is introduced with mirrors, and she is wearing a white and black costume and there is hint of purple light around the room.

As the instrumental part comes in the pace becomes even faster and in this new set fast motion is used as she is banging her head. This creates a sense of craziness to the audience.
By the end of the video the light bulb becomes a huge part of the video and is almost attatched to the female as she holds it quite often. This could be a symbol for something as the body language she reveals, portrays a sense of anger or annoyance as she sings these lyrics.
