Conventions of a Music Video

There are a lot of conventions to a music video to ensure that it is good and attractive for the audience to watch. Depending on what genre the song is the video must fit to the lyrics and what the meaning of the song is. For example in 'Cheers To That' by Rihanna which is about drinking and having a good time at the weekend the video matches this meaning shown by the screen grabs from the video to the left.

Furthermore a music video needs to have a variety of camera shots and angles like close ups and long shots, to vary what the audience is watching and will prevent viewer fatigue. For example in 'Glad You Came' by The Wanted, demonstrates this very well to prevent viewer fatigue and to keep the audience intrigued.

Also there needs to be various costume and location changes to add some imagination and gives you the chance to make the video unique. For example Lady Gaga is a great Role Model as she has amazing imagination and variation within her videos including aspects which are bizarre and out of the ordinary. The images to the left from her videos reveal the extravagant costumes she wears and variation of location.

Even more so the performer of the video must be confident in front of the camera in whatever genre their style is, but also the lip syncing must be good therefore they must know the lyrics thoroughly if they want to make this to a good standard. This is so it makes the video more realistic so the audience believes they are really singing and are telling a story or showing this meaning of the song. To the right are a few examples of artists who are great performers and emphasise their emotion really well.
